COMPLIANCE AND UTILIZATION OF GENERAL SCIENCE LABORATORY OF MCNP-ISAP: A BASIS FOR LABORATORY ENHANCEMENT PROGRAM

This study examines the utilization and compliance of the general science laboratory of Medical Colleges of Northern Philippines and International School of Asia and the Pacific (MCNP-ISAP) during the second semester of academic year 2022-2023, primarily focusing on students and laboratory instructors in science courses with laboratory subjects. Employing a stratified random sampling method for 456 student respondents and total enumeration for laboratory instructors and a laboratory technician, the study employed survey questionnaires and CHED Memorandum Order No.13 series of 2017 for data collection. Statistical techniques, including Frequency Count, Percentage Distribution, One-Way ANOVA, Pearson's R correlation coefficient, and Thematic Analysis, informed practical recommendations. The participants’ demographic profile reveals a predominantly young and female student population, with most pursuing Bachelor of Science in Nursing course. Overall, noticeable compliance with laboratory safety rules is observed, but specific areas, such as awareness of safety equipment locations and handling excess reagent bottles, require attention. The study also highlights variations in compliance with CHED Memorandum Order No.13 series of 2017 requirements, emphasizing the need for adjustments to meet professional laboratory standards while upholding general education requirements. Significant differences in laboratory assessment based on profile variables underscore the importance of tailored utilization strategies for different courses, year levels, and sex. These suggestions encompass safety promotion, resource investments, teacher competence development, enhanced accessibility, improved ventilation, and increased hands-on learning activities. Overall, this study provides valuable insights into the General Science Laboratory at MCNP-ISAP, offering specific areas for improvement and actionable strategies to create a safer, more compliant, and conducive learning environment while serving as a reference for institutions aiming to optimize laboratory utilization and enhancement in higher education settings.
